We tested the classroom kit with a group of twenty-five children, ages ten and eleven, in a school with a small playground and a lot of street lighting.

What worked: the constellation cards and the “how many stars can you count from your window” homework. What did not: the light pollution experiment with the cardboard box, which needed more adult hands than we had. Forty-five minutes was tight; sixty would have been right.

Two children asked whether the stars they counted were “the real ones or the ones from the projector”. I take that as a win.

Very useful, especially the timing note. We will add an alternative version of the box experiment that one adult can run with the whole class, and we will mark the kit as sixty minutes with a forty-five-minute short version.

If it helps, we do the star count as a competition between classrooms: which window sees more stars, and why. It takes five minutes at the start of the next session and the children arrive with strong opinions about street lighting.
